The pre-registration deadline for the 21st annual West Virginia Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program has been extended to June 26. This year’s dates are June 30- July 13 for grades 5-8, July 14- 27 for grades 8-11. Students in grades 10 or 11 receive two hours college credit upon completion of the College Prep Program. The curriculum includes mathematics, physics, computer science, creative writing, literature, and world history taught by college professors who have a special interest in the gifted child. Classes are fast-paced and challenging and involve intensive work in the laboratory. Students live in college dormitories where counselors carefully supervise them. There is a full range of recreational facilities including outdoor field trips. Classes are small (about 15 students per class), and the students get to work with their professors and advanced college students who work as assistants. The students also participate in social activities including a movie at Meadowbrook Mall, dances, and a talent show. There are many recreational sports on the campus, such as soccer, tennis, and swimming. Over 1,100 gifted children from 20 states have participated in the program. It was founded by Dr. Joseph Wiest, a professor of physics and engineering at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and his wife, Jeanie Wiest, M.D., in 1983. To be eligible to attend, a student must be identified as gifted or scored 97th percentile on the mathematics or verbal section of a nationally standardized exam.
