West Virginia Wesleyan Sweeps West Virginia Conference All-Sports Trophies
released: 05/14/03

West Virginia Wesleyan College made it a clean sweep of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) All-Sports Trophies after the announcement was made Tuesday, May 13, from WVIAC Associate Commissioner Will Prewitt.

West Virginia Wesleyan was the winner of the 2002-03 President’s Cup and the 2002-03 Commissioner’s Cup. The trophies are annually presented to honor all-around athletic excellence among West Virginia Conference member schools.

Wesleyan continued their brand of excellence on the athletic playing fields, winning six conference championships during the 2002-03 year – Men’s Soccer, Football, Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Swimming, Softball, and Women’s Track.

This is the second straight year that Wesleyan has won the President’s Cup and an unprecedented 12th consecutive year that the College has won the prestigious Commissioner’s Cup.

The President’s Cup is awarded to the school that has the highest average for sports sponsored within the WVIAC. Points are awarded based on finishes in the regular season of each sport. Scoring is weighted based upon the number of teams participating for each individual sport championship.

Wesleyan, who participates in 17 sanctioned WVIAC sports, posted an average score of 9.88 in the President’s Cup final standings. Wheeling Jesuit, who won four conference titles (Volleyball, Men’s Cross Country, and Men’s Track), finished second. Rounding out the top five were Shepherd (Men’s Tennis), Alderson-Broaddus (no championships), and West Liberty State (Women’s Tennis).

This is Wesleyan’s fifth President’s Cup since the award began in 1993. Wesleyan won the Cup in 1994-95, 1995-96, 1998-99, 2001-02, and 2002-03.

The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded based on the school’s finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC.

The Bobcats’ cumulative point total in the Commissioner’s Cup was 211.75. Wheeling Jesuit took runner-up honors with 178.21 points while West Liberty State was third (147.52), the University of Charleston was fourth (144.76), and Concord was fifth (140.10).

The Commissioner’s Cup was first presented during the 1983-84 season. After failing to win a Commissioner’s Cup during the first seven years, Wesleyan has won it every year since 1991-92 season.

“I believe winning the President’s Cup and the Commissioner’s Cup is a reflection of a great athletic staff and of a well-rounded athletic program,” remarked Athletic Director George Klebez. “We are an institution that allows our teams to be competitive within the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.”

The WVIAC was founded in 1925 and represents 15 institutions in the Mountain State at the NCAA Division II level.
