Production of Beowulf Kicks Off First Arts Alive Series of 2004 released: 01/13/03 |
Charlie
Bethel’s Beowulf is the first event of the Spring 2004 Arts Alive
Series presented on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College. The performance
is in Atkinson Auditorium Friday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m. An astonishing one-man presentation of the medieval tale of kings and monsters, Beowulf as presented by Bethel is outstanding. As one of the oldest existing poems in the English language, Beowulf is important for its historical account and its poetry and themes. Although filled with monsters and dragons, the story of Beowulf's actions and deeds still comes alive today. Often hailed as the first great work of English literature, Bethel developed the tale to be more accessible for the contemporary listener including editing the works for time considerations and setting the words to iambic meter for ease of memory and presentational effectiveness. "I am very excited to have Charlie coming to campus,” remarked Bess Park Reynolds, coordinator of the Arts Alive Series and Associate Professor of Theatre Arts and Dance Director of Musical Theatre. “He and I grew up together and as I remember driving him back and forth to rehearsals, I always thought he was one of the most creative of all of us. I'm glad he has done such remarkable work in his career and most pleased that he will be sharing his talent with the Buckhannon and college communities." This program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval by the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. Admission is $5 for the public and $3 for students and senior citizens. For more information, please contact 304-473-8104. |
