The
opera DIDO AND AENEAS will be presented at West Virginia Wesleyan
College on Friday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in Loar Hall Auditorium. Come see
the tragic Queen Dido of Carthage as she fights for her right to true
love against a Sorcerer, two Witches, and a man with a mission to find
the new Troy in English composer Henry Purcell's opera.
Wesleyan student Leah Heater is DIDO with Shanna Babbidge and Katie Oreskovich
as her faithful confidantes. Jeremiah Smallridge sings Aeneas, while the
Sorcerer and his witches are Joshua Stubbs, Sarah Nale and Laura Dennis.
Jerry Franks sings the part of the Sailor.
Natalie Shaffer, Jeremy Cottrill and Nathan Carns fill out the singing
cast. The Chorus is comprised
of the Clarksburg Madrigals and dancers from Wesleyan’s dance theatre
troupe, which is choreographed by Bess Park-Reynolds, associate professor
of theatre arts and dance director of musical theatre. In addition, Dr.
Melody Meadows, associate professor of music, worked with the singers
in creating appropriate Baroque ornaments for their vocal lines.
A Baroque Ensemble consisting of a harpsichord, two violins, viola, cello,
recorder and guitar will provide the instrumental accompaniment.
Associate Professor of Music Caroline Dees has directed the production
while Emeritus Professor of Drama Charles Presar has provided coaching.
Tickets are available at the door for $4 general admission and $2 for
seniors and students.
