Education Department Graduates 32 During 2004 Commencement

The West Virginia Wesleyan faculty of the Department of Education held a reception for graduating senior education majors and their parents on Saturday, May 1. Thirty-two education students were recognized and certificates were given to students achieving excellence in their student teaching experience.

Fall semester student teachers from West Virginia included Ashlea Ours from Buckhannon; Emily Byrer from Charles Town, and Sarah Paugh from Davis. Students from other areas included Kathleen Downey, South Park, PA; Daniel Gitzen, Sterling, VA; Bonnie May, Acme, PA; Jennifer Moury, McKeesport, PA; Dawn Sizemore, Gibbstown, NJ; Brandy Sypolt, Midlothian, VA; Rachel Wall, Burlington, CT; DeeAnn Waters, Everson, PA, and Kristen Wells, Indiana, PA.

Spring semester student teachers from West Virginia included Erika Dotson, Buckhannon; Bryan Daugherty, West Union; Clare Hebb, Parsons; Nicole Mutafis, Bridgeport; Jessica Nigh, Vienna; Denise Phillips, New Martinsville; Sarah Richards, Pullman; Amy Schoolcraft, Grafton; Stephanie Shriver, Bridgeport, and Marlena Vassar, Mt. Clare. Students from other areas included Amanda Brown, Mt. Taber, NJ; Paula Chapin, Three Rivers, MA; Casey Cowan, McMurray, PA; Amanda Culver, Port Jervis, NY; Alesha Hoffee, Marietta, OH; Heather McRae, Hyattsville, MD; Andrew Merritt, Oil City, PA; Kelly Nelson, McKeesport, PA; Rachel Scribner, Marietta, OH, and Ryan Shetterly, Perryopolis, PA.

Charlie Miller, assistant professor of education, introduced the department faculty, dean of students and all senior education majors. Presentations were made to students excelling in both rotations of student teaching. Dr. Sharon Smith, associate professor, presented elementary student teaching awards to Erika Dotson and Heather McRae. Dr. Carol Means, associate professor, presented the Specific Learning Disabilities student teaching awards to Casey Cowan, Jessica Nigh, and Marlena Vassar. Dr. Lynn Rupp, associate professor, presented the secondary student teaching awards to Daniel Gitzen, Nicole Mutafis, Rachel Scribner, and Dawn Sizemore. Dr. Tom Williams, professor, presented the research awards for recognition of the Teacher Work Sample to Heather McRae and Marlena Vassar.

Debbie Bush, director of clinical experiences, introduced this year’s recipients of the Fountie N. and Virginia Lynch Williams Teaching Award. Award winners were Nicole Mutafis and Marlena Vassar. The Williams Teaching Award was established in 1971 to “encourage excellence in elementary and secondary school teaching in West Virginia.”

Miller recognized the education majors who had received awards previously at the Awards Assembly in April. They included Marlena Vassar (elementary education) and Nicole Mutafis (secondary education) for outstanding academic achievement; Dawn Sizemore for outstanding community service; and Heather McRae, who received the department theme “Teaching Active Learning and Decision Making” award. The TALDM award is given to the student who “best exemplifies the education departments’ philosophy as an all around student, leader, and who demonstrates service to the campus and community.”
