Wesleyan to Host Fiction Festival 2004 on April 1-2
released: 03/26/04
West Virginia Wesleyan College will host a Fiction Festival 2004 on Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 2. The Fiction Festival is a two-day gathering of accomplished authors on the Wesleyan campus. The writers will discuss contemporary fiction with the English Department Faculty, give readings from their work and interact with Wesleyan students.

Attending the Fiction Festival will be Gail Adams, Kevin Canty, Peter Makuck, Padgett Powell, and Meredith Sue Willis. Adams is a professor of English at West Virginia University. She is the winner of the Flannery O’ Conner Award for short fiction for her book A Purchase of Order. She has won numerous awards for her outstanding teaching and is a part of the staff of West Virginia University’s M.F.A. program.

Canty is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Montana. He is the author of the short story collections Nine Below Zero, A Stranger in the World, and Honeymoon. He has also written the novel Into the Great Wide Open. Makuck is a distinguished professor of arts and sciences at East Carolina University. He is the author of two collections of short fiction, Breaking and Entering and Costly Habits. He has also published five books of poetry.

Powell is a professor of English at the University of Florida. He is the author of the novels Edisto and Mrs. Hollingsworth's Men, and the books of short fiction Aliens of Affection and Typical. Willis, from Shinnston, West Virginia, is the author of A Space Apart, Higher Ground, and Only Great Changes. She is also a writer of short fiction and non-fiction for children. WVU Press recently published her novel, Oradall at Sea.

“The quality of writers coming in for the Wesleyan English Department’s Fiction Festival is testimony to the strong writing program here at the College,” remarked Dr. Jeff Abernathy, Dean of the College. “We are delighted that such a strong group of writers will visit our campus.”

Campus events will begin Thursday with Canty providing a reading during the College’s faculty colloquium Thursday at 11 a.m. At 4 p.m. Friday, April 2, the authors will engage in a discussion entitled “Which Way Contemporary Fiction” with the English department faculty. This will be held in Nellie Wilson lounge of Benedum Residence hall.

The authors will give readings of their works to the public Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. each night in Nellie Wilson. Makuck, Willis, and Adams will read Thursday, while Powell and Canty will appear Friday.

“The Fiction Festival 2004 serves a very useful purpose,” remarked Dr. Mark DeFoe, Wesleyan English Department Chair. “It is especially beneficial to our students. Over the years, we have brought many nationally known poets, fiction writers, and journalists to the campus to meet with the students. We bring them because we think writing is important, not just to English majors, but to all students.

“Wesleyan has a strong history of producing accomplished writers. Many graduates have gone on to write novels, non-fiction works and poetry, while others have used their writing skills in newspapers, magazines, and in public relations careers.”
