Ensemble to Perform April 21 released: 04/01/04 |
The
West Virginia Wesleyan College Percussion Ensemble will perform Wednesday,
April 21, at 7 p.m. in Loar Auditorium. The concert will feature varied
selections of Latin, Jazz, and Classical music. Some of the selections will include: Allegro Barbaro by Bartok, Nonet by McKenzie, Autumn from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov and Fiesta Latina by Lalo Davila. “This concert is the culmination of a great deal of work and devotion to the success of the organization during the second semester,” remarked director of the Percussion Ensemble Mr. Robert Baden. “By predominately featuring melodic percussion instruments with the traditional battery percussion, bass guitar, and piano providing the accompaniment role, we are able to produce a wide variety of music seldom heard from traditional percussion ensembles. This allows the percussion major as well as students in other musical areas to perform with the ensemble. Ensemble members include saxophone, guitar, electric bass, piano, organ, bassoon, trumpet, oboe, and voice majors. I find that with the combination of such diverse musical backgrounds and abilities, the performances are musical and exceptionally mature.” The Percussion Ensemble consists of the following students: Sara Burnside, George Costa, Sean Coughlin, Samantha Dasher, Rachel Douglas, Tiffanie Downs, Jonathan Fredrick, Karyn Frum, Wesley Jarrell, Dayna Keller, Brooke Rawson, Kate Simmons, Heather Taxler, and Jason Whanger. Prior to the home concert, the Ensemble will tour local schools and give performances to elementary and middle school students on Friday, April 16. They will be performing at Union Elementary at 9 a.m., French Creek Elementary at 11 a.m. and the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School at 1:00 p.m. The West Virginia Wesleyan College Percussion Ensemble is one of three performance groups in which percussionists may participate at the College. The Ensemble is composed of music majors, both vocal, and instrumental, as well as any other interested musicians within the Wesleyan Community who may not be majoring in music. The Wesleyan Percussion Ensemble seeks to heighten its performer’s musical sensitivity and technical proficiency through the study of chamber music. Admission to the concert is free and the public is cordially invited to attend. For more information about the concert, please contact Baden at baden_r@wvwc.edu. |
