Virginia Wesleyan College continued its dominance over the West Virginia
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), winning the 2003-04 Presidents’
and Commissioner’s Cups. The trophies are annually awarded to honor
all-around excellence among WVIAC members. It marks the third consecutive
year that Wesleyan has won the Presidents’ Cup and an unprecedented
13th consecutive year the College has won the Commissioner’s Cup.Wesleyan continued its brand of excellence on the athletic playing fields, winning seven conference championships during the 2003-04 year in football, women’s soccer, women’s cross
country, women’s swimming, men’s track and field, women’s
track and field, and softball. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded to the school that has the highest average of points within the WVIAC. Points are awarded based on finishes in the regular season of each sport. Scoring is weighted based upon the number of teams participating for each individual sport championship. Wesleyan, who participates in 17 sanctioned WVIAC sports, posted an average score of 8.76 in the Presidents’ final standings, just ahead of runner-up Wheeling Jesuit and its 8.69 score. This is Wesleyan’s sixth Presidents’ Cup since the award began in 1993. Wesleyan has won the Cup in 1994-95, 1995-96, 1998-99, 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2003-04. The
Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative
score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded
based on the school's finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored
by the WVIAC. The Bobcats’ cumulative point total in the Commissioner’s
Cup was 202.58. The Commissioner’s Cup was first presented during the 1983-84 season. After failing to win the Cup during the first seven years, Wesleyan has won it every year since the 1991-92 season. “I believe winning the Presidents’ Cup and the Commissioner's Cup are a reflection of a great athletic staff and of a well-rounded athletic program," remarked Athletic Director George Klebez. "We are an institution that allows our teams to be competitive within the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.” |
