Celebration of Dr. Seuss’ 100th Birthday Set for March 2
released: 02/26/04
West Virginia Wesleyan College, in conjunction with the National Education Association’s Read Across America campaign, will celebrate the 100th birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Wesleyan's Student Education Association (SEA) members will be hosting the celebration on Tuesday, March 2, in the Benedum Campus Center Social Hall from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Over 50 Central Elementary School students will be invited to join the celebration. SEA and Central students will be having lunch together, as well as sharing a giant Dr. Seuss cake for dessert. Dr. Seuss work-stations will be set up, which children will be encouraged to participate in. Each participating student will receive a free T-shirt commemorating the event.

“This special day provides another great experience for education majors to work with public school students, which is the focus of our organization,” remarked SEA president Sarah Coyne. “Celebrating the birthday of a cherished author, who was born near my hometown, is an exciting opportunity!”

Dr. Seuss' books have delighted young and old alike for years. Born Theodore Geisel on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Dr. Seuss' first children's book was entitled And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street and was written in 1936. In 1955, in an effort to promote literacy among school children, Dr. Seuss strung together 220 words into the now famous The Cat in the Hat. Before his death in September 1991, Dr. Seuss published over 40 children's books. His work continues to introduce countless children to the wonderment and joys of reading.
