| Students Lend Support
to Stockert Youth Center Drill and Dance Team released: 01/21/04 |
Two
West Virginia Wesleyan College students are opening up their hearts and
their dance steps to help the Stockert Youth Center (SYC) Drill and Dance
Team. Two years ago, Wesleyan student Jessica Duplisea form Norway, Maine, was given the opportunity to assist Kathy Blake, the director of the SYC drill team. Jessica’s role was to bring dance into the drill team as part of her community service work-study assignment. Jessica recruited Wesleyan Bonner Scholar Jodie Sanborn from Gray, Maine, and together the two students have developed a competitive dance team. The SYC Drill and Dance team will be hosting a carnival Saturday, January 24 from noon - 4 p.m. at the Stockert Youth Center to benefit the dance team’s journey to a national competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The dance team is made up of girls from ages 11-18-years old. “I am extremely proud of the girls, they have been working so hard,” remarked Sanborn. “The girls have worked so diligently to get in this competition and are very excited to have this opportunity.” The team is also raising money for uniforms, and would like to find a community sponsor for their fledgling team. For more information contact Jodie at 304-472-4146 or Deborah Brockelman at the Stockert Youth Center 304-473-0145. |
