Students Shine in WVATA Competitions
released: 03/31/04
Eleven West Virginia Wesleyan students and athletic training majors received accolades during the 2004 West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (WVATA) Annual Meeting and Competitions on March 20 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center at Morgantown, West Virginia.

Seniors Brianna Bennett, Ashley Bland, Patrick Cohoon, Jennifer Jordan, Tracy Tutt, and Jess White and juniors April Burnell, Shikuma Hayakawa, Robert Smith, Travis Rummel, and Krystal Savarino were invited to enter the WVATA Student Oral Presentation and Poster Presentations competitions.

Bland and Jordan were selected to present oral presentations. Bland’s presentation was entitled “Sexual Harassment: A Concern in the Training Room,” while Jordan’s was “The Use of Imagery in Injury Rehabilitation: A Study of Division II College Athletes.”

Bland finished second in the competition and was awarded $100.

The other Wesleyan students were selected to present their research papers in poster format. Smith, Rummel, and Cohoon and their work, “Common Injury, Rare Surgery: Extensor Indicis Proprius Tendon Transfer at the Extensor Pollicus Longus (EPL),” finished in a third place tie with Savarino, Tutt, and White and their work entitled “NCAA Football Athlete Sustains Multiple Soft Tissue Derangement During A Non-Contact Play.” Hayakawa, Burnell, and Bennett’s work, “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome,” placed sixth in the poster competition.

To enter into the WVATA Student and Oral Presentation and Poster Presentation competitions, students were asked to submit an abstract of their research. Each abstract undergoes a blind review by a panel of WVATA members and is given a rating. The top-rated selections are invited to participate as either speakers or poster presenters at the meeting.

Awards, in the form of cash, were given this year to the first and second place finishers in each category. HealthSouth and MedExpress Urgent Care sponsored the awards.

“Participation in this type of an event is an important step in the professional preparation of the athletic training student,” remarked Jean Fruh, Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Athletic Training.
