Sleeth Gallery to Present "Walls" Feb. 24 through March 19
released: 02/19/04
West Virginia Wesleyan College's Sleeth Gallery mailbox is going to be full from February 24 through March 19. The new exhibit at the gallery, simply titled "Walls," showcases an exclusive and exciting medium known as Mail Art.

Mail Art originated in the 1970s when many artists felt that art could not be confined to the dimensions of a room. In order to remedy this, artists started sending their pieces to each other through the postal system. Creating colorful stamps and creative envelopes, the fad grew and now incorporates hundreds of artists all over the globe networking together.

Few people actually know about this interesting form of correspondence, but this exhibit will introduce them to this seemingly new idea. Because of many artists' refusal to show work that is confined to a gallery, the scope of "Walls" does not represent the actual size or creative ability of the people who participate in Mail Art.

"The show has many great examples of truly amazing art from every corner of the globe, all mailed directly from the artist to our campus gallery," said Kelvin Mason, who organized the event and is an Assistant Professor of Art at Wesleyan. You can learn more about Mail Art by following this link: http://www.dragonflydream.com/whatismailart.html.

The show promises to be fresh and inspiring. This is one mail call you will not want to miss! Sleeth Gallery is located in McCuskey Hall on Wesleyan's campus, and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling (304) 473-8433.
