West
Virginia Wesleyan College has hired Bill Lilly as head men’s
basketball coach. Lilly will replace Charlie Miller who retired
this spring. Lilly is coming to Wesleyan from West Virginia
University, where he served three years on John Beilein’s
staff as Director of Basketball Operations.
“I have had a desire to return to the floor in a coaching
capacity,” remarked Lilly in a prepared statement to Wesleyan
athletic director Dr. George Klebez. “I look forward to
the challenges that lie with the competitive environment of
the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the
tradition that the league has held for many years.”
A native of Glenville, WV, Lilly played basketball at Glenville
State College under his father, the late Jesse Lilly, before
graduating in 1982 with a degree in physical education.
Following graduation, Lilly worked for five years in the business
sector in the Glenville area. During that time, he also served
as a golf tournament director and was on the board of directors
at the Glenville Golf Club; directed the Glenville State College
Summer Basketball League for three years; and served as an assistant
basketball coach at Glenville State under Gary Nottingham for
three years.
Lilly arrived at Radford University of the Big South Conference
as a volunteer assistant in 1987. While serving as an assistant
coach, he earned his master’s degree in physical education
in 1989. He enjoyed a steady ascent up the coaching ladder at
the University and was promoted to number one assistant in 1997.
He remained at Radford until 2002, when he left to take the
Director of Basketball Operations position at West Virginia
University.
“Bill Lilly brings a lot of experience and leadership
to our program,” stated Dr. Klebez. “As far as knowledge
of the game, he is one of the best in the country, and he will
help bring a successful team to Wesleyan.”
“I am very pleased to welcome Bill Lilly to the West Virginia
Wesleyan family,” remarked President William R. Haden.
“I believe his talents and approach to the game make him
an ideal coach for Wesleyan. His philosophy for the student-athlete
is a match in what we seek. We are delighted with the commitment
and enthusiasm he will bring to Wesleyan."
