Virginia Wesleyan College continued its athletic dominance over
the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC),
winning the 2004-05 Commissioner’s Cup and finishing second
in the President’s Cup standings. The trophies are annually
awarded to honor all-around excellence among WVIAC members.
This marks the 14th consecutive year that Wesleyan has won the
Commissioner’s Cup.
Wesleyan continued its brand of excellence on the athletic playing
fields, winning four conference championships during the 2004-05
year. Coach Jesse Skiles led three teams to titles, women’s
cross country, men’s track and field, and women’s
track and field, while coach Steve Warner recorded his 12th
championship in the last 15 years with the women’s softball
team.
The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the
highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used
by the league. Points are awarded based on the school's finish
after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC.
The Bobcats’ cumulative point total in the Commissioner’s
Cup was 197.44.The Commissioner’s Cup was first presented
during the 1983-84 season. After failing to win the Cup during
the first seven years, Wesleyan has won it every year since
the 1991-92 season.
The President’s Cup is awarded to the school that has
the highest average of points within the WVIAC. Points are awarded
based on finishes in the regular season of each sport. Scoring
is weighted based upon the number of teams participating for
each individual sport championship.
Wesleyan, who participates in 17 sanctioned WVIAC sports, posted
an average score of 8.65 in the President’s Cup final
standings, just slightly behind first place Shepherd University
and its 9.36 score.
“I believe winning the Commissioner's Cup is a reflection
of experienced and dedicated coaches who work very hard to maintain
their successful programs," remarked athletic director
George Klebez. "We are an institution that allows our teams
to be competitive within the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.”
