Department of Education Graduates 35 During 2005 Commencement

The West Virginia Wesleyan faculty of the Education Department held a reception for graduating senior education/educational studies majors and their parents on Saturday, April 30. Thirty-five education/educational studies students were recognized and certificates were given to students achieving excellence in their student teaching experience.

Fall semester student teachers from West Virginia included Misty Judy, Elkins; Desiree Langford, Lost Creek; Ashley Skavenski, Riverton: Sararose Smith, Parkersburg: Allison Thorp, Kenova; Heather Traxler, Asbury; Marjorie Whitlock, Daniels; and Chad Wingrove, McMechen. Students from other areas included Lauren Gelotti, Fayette City, PA; Sarah Helman, Barre VT; Jackie Mann, Everett, PA; Kimberly Marinich, Uniontown PA; Taya Radabaugh, Byron Center, MI; and Heath Shriver, Avella PA.

Spring semester student teachers from West Virginia included Nicky Cutright, French Creek; Jeremiah Jones, Moundsville; Jessica Laughery, Parkersburg; Jessica Peak, Princeton; Kim Spencer, Winfield; Matt Tolliver, French Creek; and Dan Tusing, Mathias. Students from other areas included Danielle Blonar, McMurray PA; Sara Brett, Pittsburgh PA; Sarah Coyne, East Longmeadow MA; Caitlin Dix, Cuyahoga Fall OH; Jennifer Goodrich, Boylston, MA; Leah Graham, Westchester PA; Michael Page, Bethel Park PA; Sarah Stout, Waynesburg PA; and Lauren Tiberio, Connellsville PA.

Educational studies graduates for West Virginia included Jayme Lambert, Elkins: Stephanie Lynch, Sutton; Matthew Scott, Elkins; and Natalie Shires, Lewisburg. Graduates from other areas included Leon Thomas, Clinton MD.

Awards were presented to students excelling in both rotations of student teaching. Matt Tolliver received the Elementary student teaching award; Danielle Blonar was presented the Specific Learning Disabilities student teaching award; Dan Tusing received the Secondary student teaching award; Allison Thorp was presented the research award for recognition of the Teacher Work Sample, and the Spirit of Education Award went to Leon Thomas.

The Fountie N. and Virginia Lynch Williams Teaching Award was also given to Jessica Laughery of Parkersburg, WV. The Williams Teaching Award was established in 1971 to “encourage excellence in elementary and secondary school teaching in West Virginia.”

Education majors honored at the Awards Assembly in April were recognized: Caitlin Dix, elementary education, and Allison Thorp, secondary education, for outstanding academic achievement; Sarah Coyne for outstanding community service; and Jessica Peak and Matt Tolliver, for the department themed award “Teaching, Active Learning and Decision Making.” The TALDM award is given to the student(s) who “best exemplifies the education department’s philosophy as an all around student, leader, and who demonstrates service to the campus and community.”

Also, recognized were students who have been accepted into graduate schools, students with exemplary Praxis II scores, and students who have been offered employment.
