released:

Applications
are being accepted for the 23rd annual West Virginia Wesleyan
Summer Gifted Program. This year’s program will be from
June 26-July 9, for fifth through eighth graders and July 10
through July 23, for eighth through 11th graders. Eighth graders
can choose either or both sessions; however, it is recommended
that first time campers attend the first session. Students in
grades 10-11 receive two hours of college credit upon completion
of the College Prep Program.
The curriculum includes mathematics, physics, computer science,
creative writing, literature, and world history taught by college
professors who have a special interest in the gifted child.
Classes are fast-paced and challenging and involve intensive
work in the laboratory. Students live in college dormitories
where they are carefully supervised by counselors. Classes are
small (about 15 students per class), and the students get to
work with their professors and advanced college students who
work as assistants.
Campers will enjoy social activities including field trips,
a movie at the Meadowbrook Mall, dances, and a talent show.
There are many recreational sports on campus such as soccer,
tennis, and swimming.
Over 1200 gifted children from twenty states have participated
in the program. It was founded by Dr. Joseph Wiest, a professor
of physics and engineering at West Virginia Wesleyan College,
and his wife, Jeanie Wiest, M.D., in 1983.
To be eligible to attend, a student must be identified as gifted
or scored in the 97th percentile on the mathematics or verbal
section of a nationally standardized exam. The application deadline
is May 31, 2005.
