West
Virginia Wesleyan College President William R. Haden will receive
the Distinguished Service Award from West Virginia University
during its 136th Commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 15 at
the WVU Coliseum. The award is given solely at the discretion
of West Virginia University President David Hardesty for exceptional
leadership in the state and nation and for achievements in higher
education.
As a native of West Virginia, President Haden’s extensive
career in higher education has taken him across the United States
and beyond. He began his career in educational fund raising
in 1967. His background in higher education includes positions
in development, alumni relations and public affairs at WVU,
the University of Rochester, The University of Chicago and Reed
College in Portland, Oregon. He also served as Reed College’s
acting president before accepting Wesleyan’s presidency
in 1995. Haden’s work in Chicago and Portland involved
extensive foreign travel, and he has brought to Wesleyan a strong
commitment to expanding the opportunities for faculty and student
international experiences, particularly in Asia.
Haden’s commitment to higher education extends well beyond
the Wesleyan campus. On the state level, he is a member of the
West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship Program Board of Control and
the Governor’s Commission on International Education.
He also is a trustee of the Methodist Theological School in
Ohio and a member of the General Board of Higher Education and
Ministry of The United Methodist Church, including service on
that group’s Executive Committee, as well as serving on
the Board of Directors of EIIA, Inc., an insurance company for
higher education, and on the Committee on Accountability of
the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
“Bill Haden has provided strong leadership in higher education
since graduating from WVU, and his more than a decade of service
at West Virginia Wesleyan has made him a significant leader
in higher education throughout his lifetime,” Hardesty
said. “His contributions to Wesleyan and West Virginia
over the past 10 years have substantially advanced the interests
of both and will be felt for many years into the future.”
Born in Beckley, Haden grew up in Morgantown, graduating from
WVU in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
He earned a master’s degree in government from The George
Washington University in 1965 and then served in the U.S. Army
as a military intelligence officer. He left the Army as a First
Lieutenant.
Haden recently announced he will retire in the spring of 2006,
after serving as Wesleyan’s 17th president for more than
a decade. He is married to Elizabeth Flanagan, a senior consultant
at the National Committee on Quality Assurance. He has two children:
Laura Haden of Morgantown and Douglas Haden, M.D., of Durham,
N.C.
