WVIAC Honors Wesleyan Athletic Director Dr. George Klebez

Dr. George Klebez ’65, athletic director at West Virginia Wesleyan College, was recently honored with the Mike McLaughlin Administrative Award by the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). The Mike McLaughlin Memorial Administrative Award recognizes persons who have made outstanding contributions to the conference for a period of years. Dr. Klebez has been a long-time supporter of the WVIAC, and has served as chairperson of the conference and also as a representative.
Dr. Klebez was given the award during the WVIAC men’s basketball championship at the Charleston Civic Center “It is a great honor to receive this award,” remarked Dr. Klebez. “To be recognized in such a fashion by your professional peers is very special.” The criteria for the Mike McLaughlin award included unselfish contributions toward the betterment and continued growth and development of the conference; a record of proven high principals and ethics in performance; achieve a high degree of respect and goodwill among his or her fellow administrators; demonstrated devotion to the principles and philosophy of the conference, and proven administrative leadership and service to the conference.
Klebez is in his 15th year as athletic director of Wesleyan sports. After earning his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan, Klebez served in the United States Navy for four years before completing his master’s degree and doctorate in physical education from Indiana University. Klebez returned to Wesleyan in 1971 and held several key athletic positions through 1978, including head coach of men’s soccer, tennis, and swimming teams. Following eight years in private industry, Klebez returned to the Bobcat athletic community for a second term as the men’s soccer coach, while also coaching the men’s and women’s swimming teams. He was named the school’s athletic director in 1990.
