Softball Lady Cats Advance to Great Lakes Regional

The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will participate in the 2006 NCAA Division II Softball Regional Championships.

West Virginia Wesleyan, who earned an automatic bid into the tournament after winning the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) title, will be sent to the Great Lakes Regional at Edwardsville, Illinois, as the seventh seed. They will face second seed Gannon (PA) in the first round Thursday, May 11.

Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in double-elimination tournaments to determine the final eight championship participants. Regional competition will be held May 11-15. Winners will advance to the finals to be held May 18-22, at the James I. Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Virginia.

Wesleyan won the WVIAC title will a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 victory over West Liberty State College. The victory was the 13th conference championship overall and 12th title in the last 15 years for the Lady Bobcats.

Wesleyan trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Ashley Blandford reached on a fielder’s choice which scored Jana White and Heather Hall doubled to left center which scored Blandford to give the Lady Bobcats the victory.

The Lady Bobcats earned their way to the championship round after defeating Salem International, the University of Charleston, and Alderson-Broaddus College.

Wesleyan had four players named to the All-Tournament team -- Miranda Durst, Ashley Blandford, Kareen Bilotta, and Cory Karcesky.
