Service Fraternity Raise Funds to Fight Cancer
released: 3/28/06

College students have historically been known for creative and innovative ideas.  A national service fraternity is maintaining that tradition this spring while raising funds for a variety of deserving projects.

The Alpha Phi Omega chapters across the country will be sponsoring the “Ugly Man on Campus,” a mock competition/charity fundraiser for a number of projects.  West Virginia Wesleyan’s chapter will donate their proceeds to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.

Students will begin the nomination process this week and the winner of the “Ugly Man on Campus” will be selected on April 7 during a Relay for Life fund-raising event.  All nominations must agree to participate in the mock competition and nominees can be men or women.  Each nominee must provide an ugly picture in the ugliest costume.

During the two-week competition, the candidate who receives the most votes in the form of financial contributions will be crowned with the worthless title.  “We hope to generate a great deal of campus interest in this competition,” says Karim Motani, senior business management major from Edison, NJ.  “Our goal is to have fun and to raise funds for a very worthwhile cause.”

West Virginia Wesleyan College students are widely recognized for their community service involvement.  During the spring semester, Wesleyan students have participated in such projects as Special Olympics, Read A-Loud, Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts, a youth basketball instructional league, the Elkins Children’s Home, a money matters program for elementary students, a senior citizens companionship program, and the Sago Miners Memorial Service.
