Confidentiality
Expect the content of your meetings to be kept confidential. Information you share will not be given to individuals who are not on the professional staff without your knowledge or written authorization. There are a few exceptions to confidentiality. Counselors are required by ethical and legal standards to report situations involving a risk of imminent harm to you or someone else, including abuse to children or dependent adults. It is rare, but there are also legal situations that require disclosure. If this arises your counselor will make an effort to discuss these with you.
Counselor Records
You will be asked to complete a short form during your first visit. This information, along with the initial conversation will help the counselor to better understand your situation and reasons for meeting. Session summaries, results of inventories, and other documented information will become part of your counseling file which is kept in the Counseling Center.
Appointments
To schedule an appointment just call ext 8090 or stop in the office. We make an effort to limit waiting time between when you call and the appointment. If you cannot attend at the scheduled time please contact your counselor or call ext 8090 to leave a message. If you miss a session and want to meet the following week make sure you call to reserve the appointment time. If we are notified the appointment may be given to another student. The counselors will attempt to meet with you at the scheduled time, however, delays or the need to reschedule may occur. If possible you will be notified in advance. We regret any inconvenience to you.
Emergency Services In an emergency when the Counseling Center is not open, contact Campus Security (ext 8011) or a Residence Life staff person. The on-duty staff person will contact a counselor, other resource person or 911 depending on the situation. For crisis intervention you can also call Appalachian Health Center's 24 hour hotline at 472-2022, Women's Aid in Crisis at 473-0106, or St. Joseph's Hospital at 473-2000.
E-mail Policy
We use e-mail for general communication purposes only. E-mail is not fully confidential so we encourage you to call or come in to meet with us if you have a serious concern. We will respond to all messages but will be general in our response when necessary.
