Industry Statistics Links

Accurate, timely information about specific industries is found in widely scattered electronic and print resources. The sources listed below each contain information about many industries. More information about a specific industry may be available in the periodical literature. Professional and trade associations may also have data about business activity in their area of interest.



Current Industrial Reports
The U.S. Census Bureau reports annual summaries of production, inventories, and orders for 4,400 products, which represent 30 percent of all U.S. manufacturing.

Census of Agriculture
The Census of Agriculture provides periodic and comprehensive statistics about agricultural operations, production, operators and land use. Coverage includes crop acreage and quantities harvested, inventories of livestock and poultry, value of products sold, land use and ownership, irrigation activities, amount of commodity credit loans, number of hired laborers,federal program payments, and operator characteristics.

Construction Industry
The Census Bureau tracks the number of housing units authorized by permits, started, sold or completed. The Bureau measures the dollar value of all new construction put in place each month. The Census of Construction Industries, taken every five years, provides the most comprehensive overview of the construction industry available.

Manufacturing and Mining Statistics
Data reported here includes: Industrial Products (CIR's); Annual Survey of Manufactures; Census of Manufactures; Manufacturers' Shipments to Federal Agencies; Survey of Plant Capacity Utilization; Manufacturing Technology Surveys; Longitudinal Research Database; and the Census of Mineral Industries

Retail and Wholesale Trade
For information about retail activity, consult the Advance Monthly Retail Sales Survey, Monthly Retail Trade Survey, Annual Retail Trade Survey, or the Census of Retail Trade, all listed here. Wholesale information includes the Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey, Annual Trade Survey, Census of Wholesale Trade, and the Manufacturing and Trade Inventory and Sales (MTIS).

Service Industries and Transportation
Service industry statistics include data from an annual service survey, and the five-year Census of Service and Census of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate. The detailed transportation information available here includes the Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities; Truck Inventory and Use Survey; Commodity Flow Survey; Motor Freight Transportation and Warehousing Survey; and the Annual Survey of Communication Services

Standard Industrial Classification Manual Online
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration establishes a numberic code for industries in the U.S. The codes are classified to group related industries together. Many business reference tools use these SIC numbers to identify and track activity among industries.

Export and Trade Information
STAT-USA access to the National Trade Data Bank, with databases on international markets.

Encyclopedia of Associations
Professional and trade associations often collect and disseminate information about particular industries. The Encyclopedia of Associations lists professional and trade associations in the U.S.
