Phil W. Greenslet
Biographical Information
West Virginia Wesleyan College
alum Phil Greenslet was born and raised in northwestern Pennsylvania.
He completed his BA at Wesleyan in 1954, and then attended Emory University
in Atlanta, GA, completing a MA in 1955. He did additional study at
Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany. Greenslet also served
in the United States military as an administrative specialist at both
Fort Bragg, NC, and USAEUR Hq, Heidelberg, Germany. Before his retirement,
Mr. Greenslet worked in retail management for over forty years. He
and his wife Myra have four children.
Phil Greenslet has been interested in numismatics, the science
of studying coins and medals, for many years. Mr. Greenslet describes
himself as “an accumulator for 62 years, a collector for 28
years, and a numismatist for 16 years.” He is a member of numerous
numismatic organizations, including the Canadian Numismatic Association,
the Token and Medal Society, the Maryland State Numismatic Association,
and the Kent Coin Club. He has served as a past president of the
Kent Coin Club, the Catonsville Coin Club, the Carroll County Coin
Club, and the Maryland State Numismatic Association. He has won over
300 exhibit awards, including 14 ANA 1st place awards, 18 CNA 1st
place awards, and 2 CNA Best of Show awards. He helped to organize
the 1990 exhibits by the Franklin Mint, the Franklin Institute, and
the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, OH, to make the 200th anniversary
of Franklin’s death. In addition, he served as the ANA Exhibits
Chair for the 100th Anniversary Convention in Chicago. Mr. Greenslet
is currently Emeritus on the Board of the Friends of Franklin,
Philadelphia.
Phil Greenslet is the author of the definitive reference on medallic
images of Benjamin Franklin, The Medals of Franklin, published by
the Token and Medal Society, 1993. Since its original publication,
the Token and Medal Society has released updates for the book, which
its author still calls a work in progress, fifteen times.
