Family Weekend Activities Announced

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Families of West Virginia Wesleyan students are invited to experience campus and be with their student during an array of activities for Family Weekend 2012, which is Sept. 21 through Sept. 23.

On Friday, parents are invited to participate in community service opportunities by donating new or used books to give to a local Upshur County elementary library or Literacy Volunteer Program and also invited to support the local food pantries through Spread the Love drive by donating peanut butter for the local food pantries. For a glimpse into history through the works of a master artisan, students and parents alike can travel to Ron Hinkle Glass for special tours on Friday and Saturday. On Friday evening, Lambert’s Winery will welcome families for an Italian buffet and entertainment. For the sports enthusiast, the women’s volleyball will compete with Shepherd University in Rockefeller Gymnasium. Following the game, Buzz Sutherland, comedian, will entertain with his quick wit and unmatched charisma in the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts.

On Saturday, families will have a number of memorable activities from which to choose. In addition to a special glass tour, Bobcat Books and Spread the Love drive, families can create a memento from the Photo Emporium, shop the offerings of local artisans at Wesleyan Wares in the Campus Center Plaza, and take part in a tailgate lunch before cheering on the Bobcats in a football clash with Seton Hill University. That evening, the popular Show Cookery event will be held at 88 Restaurant and Lounge, where Chef Kathleen will take visitors on a culinary tour of Greece. She will demonstrate the creation of these delicious dishes while also discussing the history of the cuisine. Reservations must be made in advance.

That evening, “Talking ‘Bout My Generation,” part lecture, part comedy, part game show, will begin at 8 p.m. in Wesley Chapel.  On Sunday, Rev. Howard Greenfield ’75, the pastor of Grace United Methodist Church of Grove City, PA, will serve as guest speaker for the Ecumenical Chapel service.
