College to Hold American Scholar Day
Monday, January 7th, 2013
West Virginia Wesleyan College will host its seventh annual American Scholar Day on the College’s campus on Monday, January 21, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
In collaboration with Magic 106.5, West Virginia Wesleyan provides students from the Magic 106.5 listening area the chance to compete for a full, four-year scholarship to Wesleyan that includes tuition, room, and board. The first and second runners-up will receive four-year scholarships of $5,000 and $2,500 respectively, in addition to other West Virginia Wesleyan academic awards.
This year, the twelve finalists presented an average 3.85 GPA and an average ACT score of 24.5. Each finalist was required to submit a completed application and personal statement to the Office of Admission for review, as well as upload a video stating why they should receive the scholarship to the Magic 106.5 website. The videos were then voted upon by the public, and the results are factored into the final decision.
The day’s events will include a “Behind the Scenes” tour of the College, question and answers sessions with the Campus Life and Financial Aid offices, and an awards banquet for the twelve finalists and their families, where the top three students will be announced.
“The finalists for this year’s American Scholar competition are among the state’s best and brightest,” commented John Waltz, director of Admission. “It’s always a challenge for the committee to select a group of finalists from such a vast number of applications. These students have differentiated themselves with talents in academics, athletics, performing arts, community service, and of course, in and out of the classroom. It is clear that all the finalists will have tremendous collegiate and professional careers.”
This year’s finalists represent Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Marion, Monongalia, and Randolph counties.
The program is sponsored by West Virginia Wesleyan College, in conjunction with West Virginia Radio Corporation and the law firm, Columbo & Stuhr, PLLC.
