International Student Completes Internship with MLB

West Virginia Wesleyan College student Nobuhiro Fukuoka, a junior athletic training major from Tokyo, Japan, recently completed a two- week internship in Arizona.  However, he was not taking in the scenery; instead, he was working with two of Major League Baseball’s most popular teams, the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners.

Fukuoka spent one week with each of the teams helping them prepare for practice or games.  He was able to put his athletic training knowledge to use as he completed simple treatments on the athletes.

“I have learned many things, including actual skills and knowledge that I should know as an athletic trainer,” stated Fukuoka.  “I have also learned the importance of communication between athletic trainers, team doctors, coaches, players, and other staff members.”

Fukuoka was chosen for this two-week internship with the help of Dr. Rae Emrick, assistant professor of exercise science, and Nancy Porter, coordinator of the Writing Center.
