2013 West Virginia Scholar Winner Announced

On Wednesday, June 5, West Virginia Wesleyan College, along with MVB Bank, Inc., named Kathryn Robinson of Renick as the 2013 West Virginia Scholar. Robinson is a rising senior and is the first homeschooled finalist to be named a winner. She intends to major in pre-med when she starts West Virginia Wesleyan College in the fall of 2014.
“I am very excited,” stated Robinson. “I am still trying to process everything.”
In her acceptance speech, Robinson urged her fellow finalists to give thanks for the small things that do not seem important. “It is because of those small things that I am here today,” commented Robinson.
First runner-up is Rachel Fulks of Bridgeport, a rising senior at Bridgeport High School, while second runner-up is Ronald Beale, II of Scott Depot, a rising senior at Winfield High School. Both Fulks and Beale also intend to pursue pre-med degrees.
Other finalists for 2013 were: Johnna Akers of Shinnston, Lincoln High School; Kensey Bergdorf of Evans, Ripley High School; Cayla Collett of Elkins, Elkins High School; Cheyanne Conrath of Petersburg, Petersburg High School; Amanda Dawson of Sistersville, Tyler Consolidated High School; Sarah Fizer of Martinsburg, Martinsburg High School; and Dahlton Kittle of Bridgeport, Bridgeport High School.
Robinson will receive a four-year renewable tuition, fees, room, and board scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College, while Fulks will receive a $5,000 four-year renewable scholarship to the College, and Beale will receive a $2,500 four-year renewable scholarship to the College.
Scholarship funds for the West Virginia Scholar Award are provided by the Culpepper Wesleyan Scholars Award and by West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Culpepper Wesleyan Scholars Award was established in 1991 as an endowed scholarship fund by Olive O’Dell Culpepper, class of 1933, and C. Ross Culpepper, class of 1930.
The scholarship competition is open to high school juniors throughout West Virginia. Sponsors include MVB Bank, Inc., West Virginia MetroNews, Brickstreet Insurance, Friends of Coal, West Virginia Education Association, West Virginia Forestry Association, and West Virginia Wesleyan College.
