Monday, June 17th, 2013

Rich Sutphin of Seth, WV, was recently selected as one of 50 participants for the Student Leadership Summit, part of the Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement through the University of Pittsburgh.  Sutphin graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in May with a Bachelor of Science in biology.

The academy engages 50 top student leaders from across the world to focus on learning how to be effective, ethical, and innovative leaders.  Participants work alongside distinguished mentors who share their expertise and provide advanced leadership training.  Students emerge from the academy with the skills and experience to excel as global leaders.

“Being one of 50 student leaders from around the globe selected to attend is truly an honor,” stated Sutphin.  “Through this experience, I hope to gain insight into continuing my leadership throughout my life and my career.”

The mission of the academy is to produce a cadre of experienced, ethical leaders equipped to address critical issues throughout the world.  Through dynamic global mentorship, training, and service opportunities, student leaders of today will become business, community, and government leaders of tomorrow.  According to Julie Keehner, vice president for student development, Sutphin is well on his way.

“This program is very selective,” stated Keehner.  “Rich has had some great international experiences, which I am sure played a role in his selection into this program.”

“Wesleyan was instrumental in helping me to be a successful applicant to the Summit,” Sutphin reflected.  “The Center for Community Engagement was probably the most influential part of my Wesleyan experience. Through WELEAD and LEAP, I was able to gain an innumerable amount of practical and theoretical leadership, which has helped me in various aspects from attending national conferences to gaining employment following graduation.  Overall, my experience at Wesleyan has allowed me to become an effective leader and citizen.”

This year’s academy will be held July 20-23, 2013 on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus in Pittsburgh, PA.
