History Teachers Celebrate Teaching American History Grants

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

A three-day conference is being held for West Virginia history teachers June 17-19 at the Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport, WV.  This conference is in celebration of the three Teaching American History grants from the US Department of Education.

One hundred and twenty teachers will be in attendance to hear notable experts in the field of history.  The conference will feature four re-enactors, 12 sessions on various topics, and several keynote speakers.  Speakers include James Madison expert Ralph Ketchum and Constitution expert and Yale professor Akail Amar.

Following the conference, all participants will travel to Charleston, WV on June 20, the anniversary of West Virginia statehood.  A mock newscast entitled “You Are There: June 20, 1863” will be previewed at the Culture Center, a DVD that current Teaching American History members helped author.  A panel discussion will follow.
