College Reveals New Logo and Tagline

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

West Virginia Wesleyan College has introduced a new tagline and logo in a press conference today.  This new look is the outcome of a study done by a Marketing Committee, comprised of members of the campus community and overseen by Director of Admission John Waltz.

The tagline, “Find Your Voice,” was the first piece of the puzzle that fell into place.  Katie Loudin, coordinator of outreach in the College’s Center for Community Engagement & Leadership Development, developed the idea after speaking with her husband about what few words she thought captured the essence of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

“I thought Wesleyan was a place where a student could find their voice and make a powerful impact,” stated Loudin.  “We knew this to hold true in the classroom, on the stage, on the field, in the community, anywhere.”

After a market study done by Director of the Master’s in Business Administration Susan Aloi’s marketing research students, the tagline was brand-tested and approved.  With the tagline set, the next task the Marketing Committee faced was to create a logo and branding collateral to match.  The committee was looking for a logo that would transcend what Wesleyan had to offer: strong academics, unmatched extra-curricular activities, and powerful athletic teams.

The same MBA students again began surveying the campus community and found that most individuals preferred a strong “W” and a sense of West Virginia as part of the logo.  Design firm Jensen Design Studio created the final artwork, a word mark of “Wesleyan,” a customized “W,” and mountains.  Where elements like the Bobcat Paw will remain in place to support the new logo, it will only be used as a supporting element and never centrally.

“The Marketing Committee truly prioritized student input to drive all of these decisions,” commented Waltz.  “I am proud of my colleagues for an amazing process as they removed their own aesthetic, collaborated as a team, and used survey and focus group data to drive all choices.”

The College’s new tagline and logo came in the midst of a stellar year for the institution.  The Office of Advancement is reporting an increase from $2.9 million to $4.47 million in cash and gifts-in-kind received this past giving year, with seven new endowed scholarship funds in place, and an increase in alumni donor participation.  The Wesleyan Society, a leadership giving circle of donations of $1,000 and above, also showed a record-setting total this year.  The Office of Admission is also reporting they are expecting the largest incoming class in ten years at a projected 470 students.

Even though the Marketing Committee has successfully unveiled a new tagline and logo, their work does not stop there.  They will be administering a website redesign, as well as focusing on the College’s social media usage in the near future.
