Katherine Reemsnyder Passes Away at Age 104

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

Katherine Curran Reemsnyder ’30, a long-time friend of West Virginia Wesleyan College and wife of David E. Reemsnyder ’30, passed away on Friday, August 9 at Colonial Place in Elkins, WV.  She was 104 years old.

Mrs. Reemsnyder came to Wesleyan as a freshman in 1926 and stayed for two years before graduating from The Ohio State University.  During her freshman year at Wesleyan, she met her future husband David, who would become a legend at the College.  Her husband worked many jobs at Wesleyan, including professor, coach, and athletic director before his passing in 1979.

Although she did not graduate from Wesleyan, Mrs. Reemsnyder made her mark on the College.  She served as one of the coordinators of the annual Christmas bazaar in Agnes Howard Hall, the hall in which she resided during her time as a student.  She also enjoyed frequent walks on Wesleyan’s campus for many years, always stopping to rest on the porch swing at Agnes Howard.  She rarely missed an alumni banquet and often opened a room in her Meade Street home to a Wesleyan student for free until 2005.  She received the Alumni Award in 1984 and was named the college’s Woman of the Year in 1994.  In 2009, she was the recipient of The Rhododendron Award, an award established in 1967 to honor native sons and daughters of West Virginia who have brought distinction to their home state or who have offered exemplary acts of leadership on behalf of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

A member of the Emeritus Club, Mrs. Reemsnyder was active in many groups, including the Buckhannon Women’s Club, First United Methodist Church, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, AAUW, Eastern Star, Charles W. Gibson Library Board, and the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary.  She was a devoted mother to three children, all of whom attended West Virginia Wesleyan College.  She was also a grandmother to eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be at First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon, WV from 1-2:30pm on Saturday, August 17.  The funeral service will immediately follow.  Burial will be private.

The Wesleyan Community is invited to attend a reception in celebration of Mrs. Reemsnyder’s life on Friday, August 16 from 2-3pm in the first-floor parlor of Agnes Howard Hall on campus, a lounge dedicated in Mrs. Reemsnyder’s honor.  The reception is sponsored by the Chapel Office.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Dave and Katherine Reemsnyder Scholarship Fund at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
