Thursday, September 26th, 2013
Haven Clay, a senior biology major and chemistry and honor minor from Huntington, WV, was awarded the Robert and Kathlyn Fletcher Scholarship at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
The purpose of the Robert and Kathlyn Fletcher Scholarship Fund is to recognize and encourage academic achievement by undergraduate students at the College. Preference is given to students from the Huntington, WV area, including neighboring regions of Ohio and Kentucky. This academic award requires scholarship recipients have at least a 3.2 academic grade point average as a high school or college student and is renewable in accordance with college scholarship award policies so long as the recipient remains in good standing as an undergraduate student and maintains at least a 3.2 GPA.
Clay is involved in many activities at the College including Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Beta Beta Beta. Clay is a Wesleyan Service Scholar that donates her time to help at the Upshur County Public Library, and she is a member of the Hands and Hearts for Christ organization that participates in a yearly mission trip to Belize. She also works with the Rubenstein Detention Center in Davis, WV and plans programs for Wesleyan students to travel to the Center to work with the cadets on life value lessons, such as leadership and teamwork. Clay is also working with the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, a scholarship program where students carry out projects in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, and present their findings at conferences.
“Because Wesleyan is such a small campus that encourages students to get involved, it was very easy for me to receive this scholarship opportunity,” stated Clay. “The small campus has been great for my undergraduate career, and given the option again, I would make the same choice to attend Wesleyan.”
