2013 West Virginia High Schools Juried Exhibition Awards Announced

The Sleeth Gallery, in collaboration with the West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC) Art Department, announced the recipients of the 2013 Juror’s Choice and Student Art League scholarships at a ceremony held during the exhibition’s opening reception. The exhibition was juried by WVWC Visiting Assistant Professor Tonja Torgerson and artist Neal Calvin Peterson of Minneapolis, MN.
A total of 20 WVWC scholarships were awarded to high school artists from across the state. Seventeen artists were presented with Juror’s Choice awards of $500 / year (renewable for four years). The top three awards were: Juror’s Choice Gold ($3,000 / year) was given to Anna Jane Dudley from Capital High School (Charleston, W.Va.); Juror’s Choice Sliver ($2,000 / year) was given to Anna Brittingham from Washington High School (Charles Town, W.Va.) and the Student Art League Award ($1,000 / year) was given to Megan Herdering from Martinsburg High School (Martinsburg, W.Va.).

Byrd HS); Karizona Sanson (Nicholas County HS); Sadie McCartney (Elkins HS); Madison Cochran (Riverside HS); Daniel Lowe and Alyssa Minnick (Lincoln HS); Alexis McDaniels (Buckhannon-Upshur HS); Johnie Riner (Huntington HS); Alexandra Miller (Martinsburg HS); Paige Lucas, Alysha Humbles, Caitlyn Hall, Mallory Burka, Katelynn Brown, Audrey Beckner and Eleanor Paybins (Capital HS).
The Sleeth Gallery is one of only a handful of galleries in West Virginia showcasing contemporary works by practicing, nationally-recognized professional artists. The gallery acts as an educational and community-building space, in which students and members of the community can engage with the university and with artists. Along with offering an accessible space for the open exchange of ideas while engaging with contemporary art and culture, students are also encouraged to become involved in the gallery gaining valuable, real-world experience.
