Academic & Career Center
Study Abroad - The Process

Students interested in a semester abroad meet with staff for an initial information session. They are presented with a framework of resources and procedures, and a set of forms to guide them through the planning and application process. The following areas are covered in these meetings:

  • How to use the research resources in the Academic & Career Center.
  • Criteria for selecting high interest programs.
  • How to obtain the academic, financial and program information necessary to select the best program.
  • How to work with the academic advisor, in order to: identify an off-campus semester which does not jeopardize the graduation plan; consider regular and sequential required courses in the major, or requirements offered alternate years only, as well as the senior seminar or project.
  • How to determine the full financial cost of the semester to the student, beyond direct or "billable" costs.
  • General guidance on how financial aid contributes to meeting the costs of the semester abroad, the fact that options for additional aid may be available, and the need for an assessment appointment with staff of the Financial Planning Office.
  • Feedback on programs attended by previous Wesleyan students with similar academic or geographic interests.
  • A tracking form is provided to help organize the process for completing specific steps with: academic advisor, registrar, financial planning office, business office, housing and study abroad offices.
  • Students are informed about how to register for the semester abroad, and the need to discuss course selection for the subsequent academic year with their advisor. Students are informed about questions relating to international insurance coverage, personal safety, and personal conduct/liability in terms of the legal system abroad.
