Study Abroad - How it Works

Most students that have been abroad attend programs developed and sponsored by other American colleges. The term sponsor means the program to which the student applies, although that is not necessarily the same as the college they hope to attend. There are four basic patterns of sponsorship:

  • American colleges that accept applicants from students at other American colleges for a program they sponsor at a foreign college. (Students apply to Butler Univ. in Indiana for acceptance to Butler's program at King's College - London.)
  • Independent middleman organizations which work with foreign institutions to provide courses and support services to American students. (A student applies to the American Institute of Foreign Study - AIFS - for acceptance to their program at The University of Economics in Prague, Czech Republic.)
  • Consortium of American colleges offers programs abroad to students from colleges beyond its own membership. (NJ Consortium for International Studies)
  • Direct application to foreign institutions (Oxford Study Abroad Programme - OSAP - Oxford Univ., England)
