Academic Advising
The primary purpose of the academic advising program is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals. Academic Advising should be viewed as a continuous process that adapts to the changing goals of the student. Designing a sound academic program is ultimately the responsibility of the student, but the academic advisor supports the student by offering informed advice and by challenging plans still being formed. The institutional goals for academic advising are:
  • to assist in the clarification of life and career goals
  • to work with students in the development of suitable educational plans
  • to discuss the selection of appropriate courses and other educational experiences including internships and study abroad
  • to interpret institutional requirements as necessary
  • to increase student awareness of educational resources available
  • to make referrals to other college support services as needed
  • to assist students in the evaluation of their progress toward established goals
  • to reinforce student self-direction.
ADVISING PROCESS
During the first semester of the freshman year, students are advised by their Freshman Seminar instructor. Thereafter, each student is assigned a faculty advisor in his or her particular field of study or in a closely related field. Students undecided about a major are assigned advisors who will help them explore their personal interests and set appropriate educational goals. The advisor's "approval" of the student's program of study each semester acknowledges that discussion has taken place and that the student is aware of the consequences of his or her choices. Individual sessions with the academic advisor are intended to provide assistance to the student: in refining goals and objectives, in course selection, in understanding what choices are available and in providing clear and accurate information regarding institutional policies, procedures, resources, and programs. Members of the Academic & Career Center staff are available to assist faculty advisors in their work with students and provide guidance to students who are undeclared, in-between majors, or have unique advising needs.
