[Q1] What is the Upward Bound Program?
[A] UB is an intensive college-prep program funded by the US Dept. of Education. Its goal is to identify income-eligible high school students with strong academic potential who live in economically depressed areas. These are students who would not consider college as an option had they not been recommended for this program.
[Q2] What did you do?
[A] To begin with, I did all the usual things usually associated with the position of camp counselor, such as supervising students, organizing meetings and maintaining a safe environment. However, where this program differs from other camps lies in the main objective of the UB program. Beyond the usual recreational activities, there was a serious academic focus. The UB staff team has a mandate to mentor students, to act as a positive role models of a college student, and most importantly, to motivate students to expand their personal expectations for education beyond high school and for a professional career in the future.
[Q3] Was this a paid position?
[A] I earned $1,500 for a six-week summer camp, with room & board provided. The staff and students live communally in a campus dorm.
[Q4] How did you find the job?
[A] The position was advertised over a mass e-mail sent during Spring 2004, and was posted on campus. I quickly took advantage of the opportunity to earn summer money while working in my major, to gain valuable career-related experience, and to still be close to home. In the application, resume and cover letter I expressed my intense interest in the opportunity.
[Q5] Most rewarding part of the experience?
[A] The most rewarding part of the job was seeing each student succeed and stick with the program until the very end. It is absolutely amazing to look back and realize the dramatic changes that students went through in just six weeks. I really believe that I made an important contribution to that transformation. I also made good friends and life-long connections.
[Q6] Professional value for you?
[A] If you ever have the opportunity to work for an Upward Bound/TRIO Program … DO IT! You will have no regrets. For a psychology major interested in working with kids, any program involving special needs children is a great first step in applying what you've learned, focusing your goals, and preparing for your life after graduation.
