Raphael's masterpiece The School of Athens can be regarded as the perfect embodiment of the classical spirit of the High Renaissance. The subject matter, "the Athenian school of thought," cnsists of a group of famous Greek philosophers gathered around Plato and Aristotle, each in a pose or activity that conveys his individuality. In combining the perfect balance between action and emotion, body and spirit, Raphael creates a composition that realizes the High Renaissance ideals of humanism.
