Annual WVWC WE LEAD Trick-Or-Treat for Canned Goods October 31
Buckhannon, WV – The WE LEAD poverty reduction team at West Virginia Wesleyan College is hosting its annual Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods on Thursday, October 31 from 6 – 7:15 pm – during the hours of Buckhannon’s traditional trick-or-treat. Several students at the college will dress in costumes and go door-to-door in Buckhannon “trick-or-treating,” not for candy, but for canned goods and other non-perishable items. Student trick-or-treaters will be provided a card to share with neighborhood residents to verify they are participating in this event. All donations will be given to the local Upshur County Parish House and distributed to neighbors in need within Upshur County.
The Upshur County Parish House offers emergency aid for utilities, food, clothing vouchers, medical needs assistance, rent, personal items and cleaning supplies, layettes for newborns, school supplies, home repair, community gardens, and more, depending on the needs of neighbors. The Parish House particularly needs food this time of year in preparation for the holidays to provide special food baskets to families during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
WE LEAD is a student group that applies leadership skills to organize service events related to societal issues. Each WE LEAD “issue team” has two or more student leaders who work with their peers, faculty, and staff members to: understand the various (and sometimes competing) aspects of their issue, offer service and awareness projects to contribute to the problem’s solution, and raise consciousness about its existence to the Wesleyan community at large. The poverty reduction team also hosts monthly dinners free to anyone within the Buckhannon/ Upshur community.
