West Virginia Wesleyan’s eSports team has its first official home. The College celebrated the opening of the new eSports facility in the Administrative Annex Building with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony today.
The new facility features cutting-edge gaming computers, and state-of-the-art eSports training technologies, including eye trackers and video analysis software.
“The ‘Arena’ has been built from the ground up to directly address the needs of an eSports athlete. It will be essential to the development of our eSports talent in coming years,” stated Wesleyan eSports Coach Kevin Wu. “This facility replicates tournament conditions with hardware that is used by League of Legends Championship Series professionals. The ‘Arena’ will enable us to play, practice, and grow as a team and I am looking forward to the accomplishments our team will accrue moving forward.”
“Esports is one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the world,” said Wesleyan President Dr. Joel Thierstein. “We are excited to be the first college in the state of West Virginia to have an eSports team.”
Wesleyan announced the start of the school’s eSports at a varsity level program last fall and welcomed seven players to its inaugural team in August. Wesleyan is competing in the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE)-sanctioned leagues and in online collegiate circuits. Wesleyan offers partial athletic and academic scholarships and as a varsity sport, follows all NCAA guidelines on practice and training sessions.
The Bobcats eSports squad includes first-year computer science majors Abraham Blouir of Pennsboro, WV, William Butcher of Ellenboro, WV, Brandon Cochran of Given, WV, Stanley Ciciora of Lewisburg, WV, Thomas Flannery of Charleston, WV, Gabe Poling of Moatsville, WV, and Jacob Williamson of Renick, WV.
