Teaching and Learning
Excellence in teaching is a hallmark at West Virginia Wesleyan College. College faculty are invested in student learning and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies to assist students in meeting the goals of their chosen programs of study.
The Center for Teaching and Learning stores teaching and learning tools on Blackboard as well as a collection of print and electronic resources in the College library. Institutional subscriptions allow access to teaching-focused materials collected by the New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Understanding the science behind learning is foundational to course design and for supporting student efforts to learn. In addition to the College library resources, external websites focusing on the psychology of learning provide research-based strategies for course design and instructional materials to use with students.
Student research plays an important part in most academic programs at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Exemplary student work is featured in Appalachian Journal of Student Scholarship. Guidelines for applying to the Institutional Research Review Board (IRRB) are on the College website under Academics.
The Center for Teaching and Learning supports the College faculty in the design and implementation of quality online courses. The Faculty Standards for Online Instruction provide guidance for the design of online courses and the expectations for implementation. The Online Course Approval Form must be completed before an instructor teaches any online course for the first time.
