Area colleges and universities see varied enrollment, good retention efforts

The retention rate was a record for the decade and was comprised of students from across the state, she said. “Services such as academic support, the on-campus writing center, tutoring and residential experience are all part of the intentional and strategic work that the staff and faculty provide for the students,” Whitehair said. “We are really proud of the retention of last year’s class. We think it is a great testament to the experience that they are having on campus.”

West Virginia Wesleyan College student Casey Stallman participated in a summer study abroad program spending seven weeks in Madagascar. Thanks to a generous gift from Wesleyan friend and alumna Dr. E. Maxine Moose Bruhns, the E. Maxine Moose Bruhns Summer Study Abroad Scholarship provided funding for Stallman and three other students to participate in international educational programs this summer.

The planned removal of Camden Apartments at West Virginia Wesleyan College allowed the department to hold multiple training courses in the building prior to demolition in June thanks to a partnership with the college. Chief Kimble stated, “we accumulated over 400 hours of training that week,” thanks to the collaboration between the City and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

A pair of 2019 Bridgeport High School graduates will volunteer with West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Wesleyan Service Scholars this fall. “The scholarship was really competitive this year because we had really strong applications.” Service Scholars, which can be freshmen through senior students, receive a $2,000 annual, renewable scholarship ($1,000 per semester; $8,000 over four years).

Jawbone Park was a scene of celebration Tuesday evening as the community gathered in commemoration of James Carter “Jimmy” Pankow’s birthday. Pankow is a talented trombonist and the co-founder of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band “Chicago.” Honoring Pankow stems from Mayor David McCauley’s admiration and an encounter with Pankow and his band, but most notably his ties with the City of Buckhannon. The relation Pankow has with the city began with his lost love for a lady by the name of Terry Heisler, who left her home to attend West Virginia Wesleyan College.
