West Virginia Wesleyan College invites applications for the position of Director of Athletic Bands. In 2014, the College, which is a residential campus home to approximately 1,050 students, revived its marching band. Since it’s revival, the Band has been outfitted with sufficient equipment and, most recently, new uniforms. The band is made up of both music majors and non-majors. All members are excellent musicians
We seek a director who is a superior recruiter and musician who can work with a wide range of stakeholders, including a small but excellent music department and faculty, and admissions office, to continue to build upon the enviable success we have enjoyed in recent years
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a 12-month, staff position, reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management. The successful candidate is responsible for planning and administering all aspects of the Athletic Bands program, including: Recruiting and retaining qualified students with a budget goal of 25 new students per year; developing the band during scheduled practices and competitions; maintaining responsibility for expense control with all program expenditures; mentoring band members in their academic performance to assure timely progress toward degree completion and graduation; developing a schedule for practice and performances.
The Director of Athletic Bands will meet recruitment and roster goals for the Marching Band, accompanied by a robust schedule of visits to regional high schools, competitions, band festivals, and other related events. The DOAB will also be responsible for developing, maintaining, and leveraging relationships with regional high school band directors and other music educators in order to achieve positive enrollment results. The DOAB will also coordinate performances at winter and spring athletic performances for the Marching and Pep Bans.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated success in recruiting, developing and growing a collegiate band, plus a Master of Music degree or equivalent professional experience. Effective verbal and written communication skills; appropriate musicianship skills necessary for collegiate leadership and instruction; sound interpersonal skills in dealing with students, college personnel and members of the off-campus community; ability to operate a collegiate band program within budget parameters.
