The Director of Major Gifts reports to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Development at West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC). The director is a member of the fund development team responsible for identifying prospects, building relationships and cultivating gifts. The director will be responsible for cultivating relationships with alumni and friends of the College, and a portfolio of assigned prospects with a direct responsibility for major gifts. The director, in conjunction with other members of the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office, is responsible for implementation of the College’s comprehensive development plan and achieving personal and unit fundraising goals. The position offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships and actively solicit gifts from a portfolio of current and perspective major gift level donors, based on the philanthropic goals of the College.
  • Develop personalized engagement strategies for assigned portfolio and prospects to cultivate and solicit gifts ($10,000+) for the College.
  • Develop strategies to retain and increase levels of support, including increased giving and multi-year commitments.
  • Actively seek leadership level unrestricted gifts and pledges for the College’s unrestricted annual fund.
  • Execute qualifying discussions with prospective donors to identify and define philanthropic aspirations and capacity to give.
  • Plan, schedule, and complete frequent travel in West Virginia, regional and national, to contact prospects and donors in completion of portfolio/pipeline management.
  • Develop a strategy to visit assigned current donors on an annual basis.
  • Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of the College, including mission, history, and current fundraising priorities assuring effective representation of all opportunities and priorities for philanthropic support of the College.
  • Collaborate with the College’s leadership as well as colleagues and members of the Wesleyan Community to develop strategies to link donor interest with College priorities.
  • Coordinate with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations to develop and execute personalized stewardship plans for select donors and prospects as well as general stewardship and donor acknowledgement.
  • Complete additional assignments as may be required by the President or other members of the College’s Executive Leadership, as appropriate.
  • Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of the College, including mission, history, and current fundraising priorities assuring effective representation of all opportunities and priorities for philanthropic support of the College.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; at least 2-5 years of fundraising experience or in a position directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. 

Required Skills

  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to accurately enter data into a database and recall information through reports is necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies and diverse communities.
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours.
