July 10 – July 31, 2022

West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Cultural Immersion Academy is designed for global students whose first language is not English who wish to study a wide variety of academic subjects while experiencing American culture at an elite U.S. college.

The WVWC Cultural Immersion Academy is a three-week intensive program where students will take courses grounded in the liberal arts designed to improve students critical thinking skills through personalized learning. Trips to Washington, D.C. as well as nature activities in West Virginia (as COVID-19 travel restrictions allow) will provide students with real-world experiences in which to further develop their English proficiency.

  • Our Approach

Our personalized learning approach to instruction will provide students with the ability to tailor their experience to suit their own goals. Students are exposed to content of their choosing, which forms the basis of their immersive learning. Our instructors guide students in processing the information and re-presenting the material to others in a collaborative manner. Digital platforms are used as supplements and allow students to progress at their own pace, under the tutelage of faculty mentors.

The Academy is based on a Finnish model of instruction that places emphasis on personalized guidance by a teacher, focusing on problem-solving, and critical thinking. Depending on the subject, in-class activity is complemented by field-work in the form of off-campus trips (as COVID-19 travel restrictions allow) and on-campus activities that further enhance the experience.

All of this happens in an English-immersion environment. Immersion is the most effective method of language instruction.

  • Typical On-Campus Schedule

Instruction will begin on July 10 and end on July 31, 2022. Each class morning consists of three core courses designed to prepare students for field work and excursions in the U.S. These three courses will also prepare students for personalized exploration and deeper dives into topics of interest to them in personalized learning experiences.

After lunch, students will conduct experiments, enjoy on-campus experiential learning activities, or take in a presentation from a Wesleyan faculty member on a topic within their area of expertise. Afternoon sessions will also provide students with an exploration of college subjects.

After dinner, students will participate in recreational activities such as movies, games, concerts and other performances, talent shows, cooking classes, and other fun activities.

  • Getting to West Virginia Wesleyan College

International students have a variety of options when arranging their flights. Washington/Dulles International Airport (IAD) provides the most flight options.  International students will be met at the airport by WVWC staff and transported to the campus.

Clarksburg Regional Airport (CKB) is a smaller airport close to our campus.  Flights from CKB connect to Dulles (IAD) and Chicago/O’Hare (ORD).  International students will be met at the airport by WVWC staff and transported to the campus.

Students should plan to arrive on campus on Saturday, July, 9, 2022 with programming beginning on Sunday, July 10, 2022.

  • Tuition

The cost of the academy is $2,499.00 USD.

  • Small Classes

The Cultural Immersion Academy classes are small and personalized. Students will work with the same faculty member each day. Through personalized learning pathways, students will be afforded the chance to study a wide range of topics.

The program will be tailored to the needs and interests of each individual student, giving them the opportunity to select from specific academic topics that can assist them in meeting their personal goals. Topics that students can choose from include the following fields:

    • Physical sciences
    • Cultural studies
    • The Arts in the U.S.
  • Off-Campus Experiences

Academy students will enjoy various trips that will provide opportunities for students to practice their written and spoken English in the real world. The museums and cultural centers of Washington, D.C. may be visited, as well as cultural areas of D.C. with significant international populations (as COVID-19 travel restrictions allow).

West Virginia’s scenic beauty and historic small towns will also serve as an off-campus “laboratory” for students to practice English. Hiking, rafting, climbing, bike riding, and trips to Appalachian cultural centers may be a part of the student experience (as COVID-19 travel restrictions allow).

  • When You Arrive

Students will attend an orientation session, a campus tour, and will be given a West Virginia Wesleyan College I.D. card and a key to their room.

Leaving West Virginia Wesleyan College at the end of the academy

The academy ends on July 31, 2022. The College will transport students to their departure airport.
